World Environment Day 2011 in Hyderabad
The city of Hyderabad celebrated the World Environment Day 2011 in full fervor. The celebrations were spread over 10 days ending on the D Day, 5th June 2011. Officially, the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board took the responsibility of ensuring various events across the state to increase awareness about WED and specifically about forests.
In Hyderabad, AP PCB kick started with painting competitions for school children under various categories starting on 26th May. The theme given was the same as that of WED 2011, Forests: Nature at your Service. Concepts like art from waste materials were incorporated. There was a variety of events for children to participate in like essay writing, storytelling, dance, music and quiz competitions. The last competition was an oral quiz for college students and youngsters in the industry on 2nd June. On 3rd June, an art exhibition was organized where the winning entries were put on display for the public to admire and understand the importance of forests in our lives.
On the World Environment Day 2011, the Honorable Chief Minister Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy flagged off a Green Rally participated by school children, NGOs, other activitists and the public. In the evening, an event was organized to award the prize winners, which was attended by many ministers of the state, center, MLAs and MPs while the chief guest was the state minister of forest, environment, science and technology. Among the many speeches and presentations, an organization called the Green Planet Visions presented a song by children that encourages parents to lead a more environment friendly lifestyle.
Apart from the official celebrations, many events took place around the city, some by NGOs and many by corporations that focused on environmental awareness and encouraged everyone to action for the cause by doing their little bit like turning off an electrical appliance when not in use or plant a tree when possible. Over all, the city of Hyderabad involved people from all walks of life to participate in this World Environment Day 2011 that India so proudly hosts.
